Description

Introduction
Retapex is an antibiotic. It is used in the treatment of bacterial skin infections. It stops the growth of bacteria that cause infections and thus relieves your symptoms. Retapex is for external use only. You should use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. The affected area should be clean and dry before application of the ointment. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. To avoid relapse, continue the use of this medicine even if symptoms begin to clear up. Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless advised by a doctor. You may experience skin irritation at the site of application as a side effect of this medicine. Please consult your doctor if these side effects persist for a longer duration. Avoid getting it into your eyes, nose or mouth. If accidental exposure occurs, wash your eyes with water and seek immediate medical attention. You should stop using it and inform your doctor if you notice worsening of the infection or if you develop increased redness and irritation.

How Retapex works
Retapex stops the growth of bacteria that cause infections.
Quick Tips
Retapex treats minor skin infections caused by certain types of bacteria.
Apply it gently to the infected area of skin twice a day for five days.
Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, mouth or genital areas. Rinse off with water if accidental contact occurs.
Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor.
Stop using it and inform your doctor if you notice worsening of the infection or if you develop increased redness and irritation.
Dispose off any remaining medicine seven days after opening.
Consult your doctor immediately if there is no improvement in your infection after two to three days of treatment.

Adult Dose
Topical/Cutaneous Impetigo; Bacterial skin infections due to meticillin-susceptible, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes Adult: As 1% ointment: Apply onto affected area bid for 5 days. Re-evaluate if there is no response after 3 days of treatment. Total treatment area: <100 cm2 total body surface area. _ Child Dose Topical/Cutaneous Impetigo; Bacterial skin infections due to meticillin-susceptible, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes Child: As 1% ointment: >9 mth: Apply onto affected area bid for 5 days. Total treatment area: <2% of total body surface area. _ Contraindication Hypersensitivity. Mode of Action Retapamulin is a pleuromutilin antibacterial isolated from the fungus Clitopilus passeckerianus. It is a bacteriostatic agent that works by inhibiting biosynthesis of bacterial protein by binding at protein L3 on the ribosomal 50S subunit. It also inhibits peptidyl transfer and blocks P-site interactions at this site, thus preventing the formation of active 50S ribosomal subunits. Precaution Discontinue use if skin irritation occurs. Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection. Re-evaluate if there is no response within 3 days. Children <9 mth. Pregnancy, lactation. Lactation: use caution _ Side Effect 1-10% Application site irritation (2%) Headache, pyrexia, pruritus, eczema, diarrhoea. _ Interaction Concurrent application w/ other topical products to the same skin area is not recommended.
