Medicine Overview of Xitob 0.30% Eye Drop

Introduction

Xitob is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye (eg. conjunctivitis) and the eyelids (e.g. blepharitis). It may also help to prevent an infection after an eye injury or surgery.

Xitob stops the growth of bacteria and thereby helps to cure the underlying infection. Follow your doctor’s instructions precisely for administering this medicine in the eye. Wait for at least 5 minutes before applying any other eye medication. It should be used regularly at evenly spaced time intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening.

It is a broad-spectrum type of antibiotic effective in killing many types of bacteria. However, it will not work for other types of eye infections (e.g. viral) and therefore, should only be used if prescribed by your doctor. Unnecessary use of any antibiotic can lead to a decrease in its effectiveness in the future.

Common side effects seen with this medicine include temporary eye/ear irritation, burning sensation, itching, and redness after administration. Consult your doctor if these side effects persist or if your condition worsens. It may cause some short-term blurring of vision when first used. Therefore, do not drive immediately after administering this medicine. Contact lenses should not be worn while you are using this medicine or while you have an active eye infection.

How to use Xitob

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

How Xitob works

Xitob is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth in the eye by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. This treats your eye infection.

Quick Tips

Your doctor has prescribed Xitob to treat bacterial infections of the eye.

Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.

Xitob may cause damage to cornea on long-term use.

Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop.

Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution.

Stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 mins. Notify your doctor if it persists for longer.

Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Severe infections: Instill 2 drops into affected eye every 30-60 minutes initially until improvement, reduce treatment frequency before discontinuation.

As eye ointment: Mild to moderate infections: Apply a half-inch ribbon bid-tid into affected eye.
Severe infections: Apply a half-inch ribbon into the affected eye every 3-4 hr until improvement, reduce treatment frequency before discontinuation.

Contraindication

This eye drop is contraindicated in epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, varicella and other viral disease of the cornea and conjunctiva.It is contraindicated in mycobacterial infections of the eye caused by acid-fast bacilli such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium leprae, or Mycobacterium avium. Fungal diseases of eye, untreated purulent infection of the eye. Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.

Mode of Action

Tobramycin acts by binding to 30S ribosomal subunits thus interfering with bacterial protein synthesis. It is active against many aerobic gram-negative bacteria and some aerobic gram-positive bacteria but inactive against Chlamydia, fungi, viruses, and most anaerobic bacteria.

Precaution

May result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Patient Counselling This drug may cause temporary blurred vision, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery. Contact lens wear is not recommended during treatment

Lactation: Unknown whether drug is safe for nursing infants; discontinue, or do not nurse

Side Effect

Localized ocular toxicity and hypersensitivity, including increased lacrimation, itching and edema of eyelid, and conjunctival erythema (<3%)

Sensitivity reaction, punctate keratitis

Interaction

Increased nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity with etacrynic acid, furosemide, other aminoglycosides, cefalotin, cisplatin, vancomycin, piperacillin, ciclosporin, amphotericin B. Decrease serum tobramycin levels with miconazole.

Potentially Fatal: Increased neuromuscular-blocking activity with magnesium and other neuromuscular-blocking agents.
